Pacific Tsunami Museum

Located in Hilo Bay in the area of the historic 1946 and 1960 tsunamis, the Pacific Tsunami Museum serves as a living memorial to those who lost their lives in past tsunami events. The museum’s goal is to save lives through promoting tsunami education and to preserve history. Exhibits in the museum detail “The Story of Hilo” through a collection of photos and stories documenting Hilo town’s previous tsunamis. Through various outreach programs and events, the museum’s community awareness initiatives involve community and business preparedness fairs to organized response plans. The Pacific Tsunami Museum also offers self-guided walking and driving guidebooks of past tsunami sites, including a mixture of survival stories and historical photographs. It allows visitors to take a tour within the East Hawaii tsunami corridor from the northern end of the Hamakua coast down to popular beaches in Keaukaha.
